Set in the 21st century, Colorado Springs, Co, USA.
Anne sighed a breath of relief as she logged out of the phone for the day. She immediately jumped up and called across the divider to her friend Charity.
“ Hey, Charity, can you take me to the bus stop this afternoon?”
“Sure Anne, no problem, give me a minute here ok?”
“Ok. I have to finish up here anyways.”
She sat back down and quickly closed all of her programs before restarting the computer and turning off the screen. Then she finished tallying all of her sales for the day. She shoved all the papers on her desk into her desk drawer “I’ll put it back in order tomorrow.” She thought to herself, “I’m getting out of here.” She picked up her tally sheet and her purse after dropping off the tally sheet she met Charity at the end of their row.
“Ready to go little lady?” Charity asked
“Uhuh, I’m so sick and tired of being on the phones aren’t you?” Anne replied
“That’s an understatement!” Charity said.
They headed out the door after clocking out. The sun beat down relentlessly outside but the two girls loved just getting outside of the building for a little while. They hopped in Charity’s green car and headed for the bus stop chatting all the way. When they got to the parking lot near the bus stop they continued to talk until the bus drove up and Anne jumped out of the car calling goodbye and thank you as she rushed to catch the bus. Digging in her purse for her thirty one day pass she got irritated with herself because she couldn’t find it. So she pulled $0.85 out and asked the bus driver if it would work she was really sorry. He let her get on but she didn’t feel right about it so got out at the Chapel Hills Mall. Wondering whether she had any money in her account in order to get out some money from an ATM she went inside and checked her account finding she only had $10 in her account.
“Oh no” she thought “why am I so stupid! Hmmm I wonder where I can go and buy something and only get $5 dollars out instead of $20 or $10………. K-mart might let’s go see.”
She quickly walked down to K-mart and picked up a pop from the cooler without thinking to ask how small of change you can get back she went ahead and bought it. Then found out that she could only get $10 out.
“Aggravation,” she thought, “now what am I gonna do?”
She walked out of the store opened the pop and drank some. She couldn’t figure out what she should do. She didn’t want to bother her mother since she had been so sick. So she called her friend Brandy instead.
“Hello,” Brandy answered.
“Hi, Brandy watcha doin?” Anne asked
“Oh just getting ready for church tonight how about you?” Brandy replied.
“Well I’m trying to get to church but I’ve run into a problem. I was wondering if you have it in your ENT account could transfer over just 5 dollars so that I can get some money out so I can get on the bus. You see I only have 10 dollars in there and the only place around here will only give $10 out but I have to buy something first.” Anne asked.
“I would love to help you Anne, but I don’t have any money in that account.” Brandy answered.
“Oh well, Thank you anyways darlin’ I thought I would try at least.” Anne replied “I guess I’d better let you go so that you can get ready pray that I find a ride ok.”
“Ok I’ll see you at church.” Brandy said. “Bye”
“mm’Bye” Anne replied.
“Hmm now what do I do?” Anne wondered. “I guess I’ll have to call mom after all.”
She dialed the quick number for her mother on her cell phone. “ring, ring, ring, “This is Diane, sorry I’m not here right now if you’ll leave your name, number, and a message I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. BEEP.”
“Argh,” Anne sighed. “ maybe Jo Anne will come pick me up.”
She dialed again and got another answering machine. So she text messaged her and let her know she would probably be late since she was supposed to be praise singing. Now Anne knew what she was going to have to do. She was going to walk down Academy until she found someplace she could take out only five dollars. So she started out across the parking lot and then across the street her hair, which she had left down, whipping in the wind. Right after she crossed the street it started to rain. So she dashed into the Barnes & Noble bookstore. Then she remembered that her friend worked in the Starbuck’s café there. She went up to the counter and asked for Leonard.
“He’s not here sorry.” The man said.
“Does he still work here?” Anne asked.
“Yeah, but only once a week.” The man replied.
“Thanks.” Anne said.
She walked away trying to figure out what to do next. She tried calling her mom again but the call wouldn’t go through for some reason. So then she tried calling her house. She still didn’t get through. Her phone wasn’t working. She sat down and tried to figure out what else she could do. It was getting late and if the didn’t get a ride soon she wouldn’t be able to get to church at all. So she got up and asked to use the phone. She called mom again, still no answer. I give up she thought. So she went and got a book and started to read. Several times she got up and went outside thinking it had stopped raining but no it was still raining. Finally she finished the book and went outside again fortunately it had stopped raining. So she started briskly out. Soon she found out that this was the time of night that all the sprinklers were on. So she ran through most of them thinking it was really not much different than walking in the rain. About 15 minutes later she saw a King Supers and remembered that they normally asked if you wanted cash back. So she went in and asked the lowest amount they would give. Sure enough it was 5 dollars. “Thank you Jesus” she prayed under her breath. For by this time she was almost in tears because she was so aggravated at herself for her stupidity of not only that night but also of her actions that had her without reliable transportation for herself.
This is just the first part of the story I’ll have more later peeps. Please comment on my story writing abilities. I know this is just the first part and I am working on the rest of it but I would like your opinions.
